Murphy Irish Dancers win World Championship

The Murphy Irish Senior Dancers spent Easter Week in Montreal, Canada competing with more than five thousand Irish dancers from all over the world. And they won! They are the World Champions!

A panel of seven judges - also from around the world - scored the dancers 475 out of 500 available points. They outscored their closest competitor by over 100 points. It is estimated that more than 20,000 people were spectators and had the opportunity to witness the competition.

A win like this does not come easy. Competition is stiff and the dancers need to practice constantly. Few athletes practice as much, and in this Superbowl of Irish Dancing it paid off for the Murphy Irish Senior Dancers.

Free Health Screenings at Cleveland Asian Festival

The Cleveland Asian Festival is known for its cultural performances, family friendly activities and delicious food.  These components contributed to the Cleveland Asian Festival being named Best Festival in Cleveland.  The annual two-day event typically draws about 40,000 people to Cleveland’s Asia Town and they spend about $2 million at the event and in the area.

But the most valuable contribution of the annual Cleveland Asian Festival may be the Health Pavilion.  Free Health Screenings are available for all attendees at the Cleveland Asian Festival.  Major health care organizations will be in attendance: Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth, Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, Asian Services in Action, and Cleveland Department of Public Health.

Screenings include vision, blood pressure, body mass index, glucose, cholesterol, lead testing, mammogram (by appointment), sleep disorders, bone density, HIV, and dental.  Health Education will also be available in relation to all of the screenings along with alternative medicine.

Health Pavilion Chair Michael Mendoza said “The health pavilion is a great way for festival goers to learn about their health and health services from local experts.  Health care organizations benefit from the high traffic of people attending the festival to promote their services."

Volunteer interpreters will be on hand to help translate many Asian languages for the health screenings.   The community should be made aware so they do not miss this valuable opportunity for free, culturally aware health screenings.

About the 2015 Cleveland Asian Festival

The 2015 Cleveland Asian festival will be held May 16th & 17th, 2015 on Payne Ave between East 30th and East 27th Street in Cleveland.  Admission and Parking are free.

The Cleveland Asian Festival features modern and traditional performers on two main stages as well as a food area with dozens of restaurants featuring various Asian foods.  The entire family will find something to enjoy including an Educational Children’s Activity Area, Sushi and Egg Roll Eating Competitions, inflatable sumo wrestling, Free AsiaTown Trolley Tours and more.

St Patrick's Day

Don’t believe the exaggerations from the media that St Patrick’s Day is a drunken bash.  The few problems, usually from a handful of young people who are not Irish or could care less about the cultural significance of the day, make for great TV highlights but do not reflect the spirit of the day.

Many Irish start the day with Mass – it is a religious holiday in Ireland – and there is even an event called Sober Seventeenth, a family friendly, alcohol free event.  Whether you are Irish or not, enjoy Cleveland’s biggest parade.

It’s always fun to see the Cleveland Asian Festival marching in the Parade.  Hopefully Paramjit Singh, a Sikh friend, will wear his green turban again.   There will also be marchers from the Polish community and frequently Hungarians, Ukrainians and other participate as well with all the Irish groups.

It's a great day for all.

Tin Roofs and Rock 'n Roll

Tin Roofs and Rock 'n Roll
by Amy Kenneley

How did The Nut Shop get to be our hangout? I don't know, but that was where we landed when we had outgrown the neighborhood playground. It was just a short walk up 101st street to Euclid Avenue--"Uptown"-- where there were five movie theaters competing for your popcorn and Goobers change. I can see their beckoning lights even now: University, Keith's RKO, Alhambra, Circle, and Loew's Park.

Was it "Rock Around the Clock" that blared from the loudspeaker outside the storefront that drew us in? If so, Then Bill Haley and the Comets must have been our Pied Piper.

The annual One World Day is the highlight of the busy calendar of summer events in the Gardens and the one official occasion that all the Gardens get together to celebrate as one.  Events include a Parade of Flags, a naturalization ceremony, cultural performances, entertainment and more.

The 68th annual One World Day will be produced by two icons of the Cleveland international scene: Johnny Wu and Ken Kovach.

Cleveland Cultural Garden Federation president Sheila Murphy Crawford said “With the expertise and inspiring enthusiasm of our new producers, Ken Kovach and Johnny Wu, the 68th One World Day Celebration in our historic Cultural Gardens is bound to be a smashing success and definitely the place to be for the summer season.”

Ken Kovach is currently president of International Community Council - Worldwide Intercultural Network and has served as board chairman of the International Services Center, leader of the International Folk Festival and many more ethnic projects.

Johnny Wu is an award-winning film-maker and one of the founders of the popular Cleveland Asian Festival.  He is a well-respected and driving force in the Asian community and beyond.
“It is an honor to serve as co-director along with Mr. Kovach to make One World Day Celebration a fun experience for this year and moving forward to next which will be the centennial celebration,” said Mr. Wu.  “There is a lot of work to do, but we are confident that we can accomplish it all.  Most importantly, we want to create synergy within the Cultural Gardens and other organizations to promote the art, culture and diversity of what Cleveland is about!”
The 68th annual One World Day on August 23, 2015 is the official kickoff of the Centennial celebration of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.

Maslenitsa Snow Games

A Maslenitsa celebration always has snow games and the first annual Maslenitsa in the Cleveland Russian Cultural Garden was no exception. The snow and cold was not a problem for the event - it was a welcome necessity! Maslenitsa is celebrated outside in Russia so outdoor activities are expected and part of the fun.

A huge snow fort was built which led to snowball fights, sledding and Capture the Flag type games.

This game is called elephant (slon in Russian).

A Winter Fashon Show - for babushkas!

At the first annual Maslenitsa event in the Russian Cultural Garden in Cleveland Ohio there was a babushka (scarf) fashion contest. About 8 ladies (and 1 man!) modeled their scarves and then a winner was selected by 3 judges.

Never heard the word Maslenitsa? Think of Mardi Gras, Carnival, Carnaval, Karneval . . . that's Maslenitsa by any other name. It's the party day before Lent begins in Russia.

Youth speak out for Life By Joseph Patrick Meissner

It is Thursday, January 22. This is the Forty First Annual Youth Rally for Life. Normally we have held this event on Cleveland Public Square at noon in the midst of all the lunch-time crowds.

Despite the usual freezing cold, the young people have always come from their high schools and colleges to deliver their messages of hope and love. We more "mature young people" come to listen and find inspiration.

Should you vaccinate your kids? Dr Toby Cosgrove

Should you vaccinate your kids?

Dr. Delos M. (Toby) Cosgrove, CEO and President of the Cleveland Clinic, said that everybody should get vaccinated and that there is no evidence that the vaccines are associated with autism. He warned that we will have an uprising of diseases (like measles and whooping cough) if we don't immunize.

Dr. Cosgrove answered this question at the Rotary Club of Cleveland event that honored Dr. Cosgrove with the International Service Award on International Fellowship Day. Watch the short (less than 1 minute) video.

Feeling 'Up' about Downsizing

Can you relate?

Feeling 'Up' about Downsizing by Amy Kenneley.

It started innocently enough. The winter closed in and the rooms did too. I looked around at the stashes of accumulated boxes and drawers full of things and wondered, "Who is going to want this?"

There needed to be a letting go of things that had been collected --and collecting-- through the years. How did it all happen?...

The answer is... Simple Math Trick

Here's a very basic math exercise that won't amaze your friends but will get them thinking. I like to pretend I am opening an envelope a la Johnny Carson's Carnac or have the answer written on my arm or something.

Pick a three digit number of different numbers (so 123 or 487 are OK but 111 or 232 are not) Let's use 816 as an example.

Reverse the number. So 816 becomes 618

Subtract the smaller number from the larger. 816-618=198

Reverse the answer number. 198 becomes 891

Add that number to the answer of the subtraction. 891 + 198 = 1089

Voila! The result is 1089!

It's simple to prove with a little Algebra - Let the Geek know if you can't figure it out. It's based on the places of the digits so if you choose a number like 546 the process will be 645-546=99 and 99+99=198 not 1089.

You have to look at it like 99 is really 099. So 990-099=891 and 891+198=1089

Note also that it may not work with repeated digits because if it's a palindrome like 575 when you reverse it you will also get 575 and the difference will be 575-575=0 so there is nothing to work with.
