Microsoft Office 2010

If you are still in the Clippy era and using an old version of Office like Office 2003, then the upgrade to Office 2010 will introduce you to the Ribbon interface, XML formats and more.

But what does Office 2010 bring to the party if you are already using office 2007?

That's what I asked Microsoft IT Evangelist Matt Hester in this recent vidcast.

Year of the Tiger

The Chinese Year of the Tiger began with the new moon on February 14, 2010. The St. Clair Superior Development Corporation (SCSDC) has installed 25 fiberglass tiger sculptures featuring unique designs created and applied by Northeast Ohio artists/organizations.

Check out pictures of the Tigers and then vote on your favorite.

The Geek likes the Cleveland: The Tiger of Champions which includes images of Jesse Owens, Lou Groza, Bob Feller, Jim Brown and LeBron James.

This Fire Tiger is also pretty cool.

Apple iPhone 4 woes

An interesting quote from the EE Times newsletter:

Uh-oh. All is not well in Apple World. Users of iPhone 4 are experiencing reception problems that at least one analyst attributes to Apple's novel use of the smartphone's frame as an antenna.

A design flaw of this magnitude might pose a huge problem for other companies, but not Apple. The throngs of Apple Nation will likely brush it off, hold their phone in the manner prescribed by their Supreme Leader and get back to downloading apps like Sexy Girl Talk and showing off their photos to random strangers they meet on the train.

Regina Brett book

A friend in Louisville, KY forwarded me the first copy. She said, 'You have to read these life lessons written by an 90 year old woman."

I quickly scanned them and noted the name, Regina Brett, of the author.

Yes, it was the same Regina Brett who writes a column in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. I replied to my friend that yes the lessons were terrific but there was no way the author was 90 years old.

Brett has turned her 50 life lessons into a terrific book.

Shaping University Circle

"What's good for University Circle is good for all of the Cleveland area." said Chris Ronayne.

So began the Corporate Club at Landerhaven panel discussion on "Shaping University Circle." With more than two billion dollars worth of construction going on right now in the University Circle area, this is not an area of if-come or hope-to-see. It is a vibrant growing part of what-is in Cleveland.

Parade the Circle

This isn't the typical parade. With floats decorated by University Circle institutions and participants tapping into their vast creativity, Parade the Circle is as unique as the neighborhood it travels through.

These two got married earlier that morning and then marched in the parade. Those 4 acrobats were actually mounted to a frame that the groom supported with his back.

Fat Suit Sumo Wrestling

I had a blast at the first annual Cleveland Asian Festival.

So did the 10,000 others who showed up.

See lots of photos and videos from the Asian Festival at ClevelandPeople.Com

This one video cracks me up every time. They had fat suits so people could try sumo wrestling and it was hilarious to watch.

Congratulations Anamika Veeramani

Congratulations to Anamika Veeramani who won the 2010 National Spelling Bee last night!

Here is a short video of when Anamika was honored by FICA earlier this year. (Anamkia is near the end of the video)

Iconoclast Engineer

Tony Sumodi is a brilliant engineer - and quite a character. Read the official profile of Tony Sumodi and be sure to watch the short video where Tony shares his philosophy.

I like his idea for 4PM on Saturdays!

Cleveland Public Library gets huge donation from Slovenia

The Rotary Club of Maribor Park, Slovenia presented the Cleveland Public Library a gift of over six thousand books in Slovenian!

The Rotary donated the books in an act of friendship and in an effort to promote the Slovenian language in the Cleveland area. There are more Slovenians in Cleveland than any other place in the world, with the exception of Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia.

Pictures and videos from the event.

Girl of my dreams

There's something special about this girl that no Geek can resist.
