St. Patrick's Day Parade in Cleveland 2022

 The 2022 St Patrick's Day Parade in Cleveland took place after missing 2 years because of the Covid pandemic.

Before the Parade honorees and dignitaries gathered on the steps of the Cosgrove Center including Grand Marshall Tom McManamon, Mother of the Year Rita Lally, Inside Co-Chair Eileem Mangan Stull and Outside Co-Chair Patricia Coleman Lavelle.

Because the 2020 Parade had to be cancelled, the 2020 honorees were also there: Grand Marshall Tom Scanlon, Mother of the Year Kathleen Mangan, Inside Co-Chair Maureen Mohney and Outside Co-Chair Christopher Cooper.

Bishop Edward Malesic and Mayor Justin Bibb

Mayor Justin Bibb, Bishop Edward Malesic and Council President Blaine Griffin were also there.

Jim Kilbane served as MC and Katie Cooper led the Irish anthem in Gaelic and then the US anthem. Watch a video of the ceremony before the Parade:

Marilyn Madigan introduced 2017 Cleveland St. Patrick’s Day Outside Co-Chair Margaret Lynch at the annual Saint Brigid Day Mass and Breakfast put on by Our Lady of the Rosary Division of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians in Cleveland.

West Side Irish American Club 2016 float

Tim Campbell of the West Side Irish American Club in Cleveland explained the club’s float in the 2016 St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

The theme was "Commemorating the 1916 Easter Rising and Ireland's Quest for Freedom" and the float featured the actual signing of the proclamation that declared Ireland free from British rule.

Jim Peppard of the Irish American Club East Side float committee for the St Patrick's Day Parade explained the club’s 2016 float.

The theme was "Commemorating the 1916 Easter Rising and Ireland's Quest for Freedom" and the float featured lots of motions, sounds, smoke and even LED lights.

This float won Best of Parade.

St Patrick's Day and drinking

This is how we started the latest ClevelandPeople.Com eNews blast.

While many outside the community wrongfully joke that St Patrick's Day is one big drunken party, the fact is that much of the actual Irish community begin the day celebrating Mass (See below for St Colman's Mass and activities for example) and then enjoy the day responsibly.  The media loves to show a picture of some teen acting up after having his first beers but in reality that stereotype is dated, insulting  and just plain wrong.   99% of the people celebrating will enjoy the week's events and the Parade in a responsible manner.  Don't be fooled by the 1% who attract all the attention.

St Patrick's Day

Don’t believe the exaggerations from the media that St Patrick’s Day is a drunken bash.  The few problems, usually from a handful of young people who are not Irish or could care less about the cultural significance of the day, make for great TV highlights but do not reflect the spirit of the day.

Many Irish start the day with Mass – it is a religious holiday in Ireland – and there is even an event called Sober Seventeenth, a family friendly, alcohol free event.  Whether you are Irish or not, enjoy Cleveland’s biggest parade.

It’s always fun to see the Cleveland Asian Festival marching in the Parade.  Hopefully Paramjit Singh, a Sikh friend, will wear his green turban again.   There will also be marchers from the Polish community and frequently Hungarians, Ukrainians and other participate as well with all the Irish groups. 

It's a great day for all.
