Mother Teresa Canonization Ceremony in Albanian Cultural Garden in Cleveland

The Albanian Cultural Garden hosted a canonization ceremony for Blessed Mother Teresa on Sunday September 4, 2016. "Many people don't know Mother Teresa was Albanian," said Cleveland Councilwoman Dona Brady, one of the founders of the garden and leader of the ceremony. 

The Albanian Garden was the 29th ethnic garden to be dedicated in the 100-year-old-Cleveland Cultural Gardens. The dedication of the garden in 2012 was attended by Albanian President Bujar Nishani, Albanian Ambassador Gilbert Galanxhi and Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson. The ceremony included three musicians who were adopted as children from one of the orphanages of Mother Teresa. See photos and videos of the 2012 Albanian Garden dedication.

The Albanian Garden is centered around a 7-foot bronze statue of Mother Teresa.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta, ethnic Albanian, Nobel Peace Prize winner and founder of the Missionaries of Charity who dedicated her life to helping India's poor, was canonized as Saint Mother Teresa by Pope Francis. "We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean, but the ocean would be less because of that missing drop" - Mother Teresa

Cleveland Cultural Gardens Centennial Plaza Groundbreaking

Sheila Murphy Crawford, president of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation, invited Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson and other dignitaries to ceremonially break ground in the Centennial Plaza of the Cultural Gardens during the 71st annual One World Day in the Centennial Year of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.

 In the background, the band No Strangers Here consisting of Pat Hoynes, Bob Crawford and Larry Bachtel performed a special version of the Garden Song (Inch by Inch, Row by Row) at One World Day 2016 in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.  The lyrics spoke about the Centennial of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens and the 71st annual One World Day.

Welcome to 71st annual One World Day, posting of colors and national anthem

Sheila Murphy Crawford, president of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation, welcomed the crowd to the 71st annual One World Day in the Centennial Year of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.

She introduced the Cleveland Police Color Guard who presented the colors and then 11 year old Polina Kornyushenko sang the US National Anthem.

While 2 young Serbian Americans played the accordion, youngsters and others danced through the Serbian Cultural Garden in Cleveland at the 71st annual One World Day and the Centennial of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.

Roll out the Barrel by the Italian Band of Cleveland

The Italian Band of Cleveland marched in the Parade of Flags at One World Day 2016 in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.  This was the 71st annual One World Day and the Centennial of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.

Here they played the polka classic Roll out the Barrel before the Parade of Flags began.

Miss Czech/Slovak US Queen at One World Day in Cleveland

Miss Michaela Marenka Steager is the 2016/17 Miss Czech/Slovak US Queen.  She lives in Nebraska and came to the 71st annual One World Day in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.  This was Michaela and her parent’s first trip to Ohio.

Laurel Tombazzi introduced Michaela and spoke about the competition which now includes Carpatho Rusyn and well as Czech and Slovak heritage.

Michaela showed her kroj (traditional costume) which includes a favorite tie from her late grandfather.

Indian Independence celebrated at One World Day in Cleveland

Members of the Cleveland Indian community celebrated the Independence of India in the India Cultural Garden on One World Day 2016 in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens in a ceremony organized by FICA, the Federation of India Community Associations.

Near the large statue of Mahatma Gandhi, Satish Parikh spoke about gaining Independence, shouted Jai Hind and then led the singing of Jana Gana Mana, the national anthem of India.

One World Day tomorrow

The 71st annual One World Day will be held in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens on Sunday August 28, 2016.

This is the 100th anniversary of the Cultural Gardens (the first one was established in 1916) so there are some very special happenings that day. The price is right (free), getting there and parking is easy and free and shuttles and trolleys will help you get around. And those of us of a certain age all know the headlining act Michael Stanley who will perform for free at 6:15 PM!

You may choose to spend much of the day in the Garden(s) of your heritage enjoying the performances and food. Or you may want to see some new and different acts and try new food and drinks. Here are a few items to encourage you to attend:

• Free Parking, Free Admission, Free Entertainment, Free Souvenir book
• Free Lolley the Trolley tours of the Gardens
• Free Passport to Peace activities in each Garden
• Ethnic food in each Garden - Hofbrau Haus Beer Garden in the German Garden, Slyman's corned beef, Hungarian Budapest Cafe, Vietnamese Bahn Mi, specialty ice cream, etc.
• Variety of ethnic performances throughout the Gardens. Very diverse, something for everyone, unique settings. Examples Scottish Games, Yoga, Asian dance, opera, Middle Eastern dance, etc.
• Inspiring Naturalization ceremony for new citizens from about 25 different countries
• Parade of Flags featuring dozens of nationalities, ethnic costumes and more.
• Special Centennial headlining act - Michael Stanley and friends! (Free concert!)
• And lots more.

Yes, Cleveland's own Michael Stanley will be the closing performance (about 6:15PM) on Sunday. For free!

For people unfamiliar with the Cleveland Cultural Gardens, getting there and parking always seem to be a concern. The Parking team has made it very easy for you to get to and park (for free) in the Gardens for One World Day. Believe me; it's easier than it sounds.

Sheila Crawford - Michael Stanley at Cultural Gardens concert

Cleveland musician Michael Stanley is the headline act for the Centennial celebration in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens at the 71st annual One World Day on August 28, 2016.

 Cultural Gardens board member Dan Hanson spoke with Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation president Sheila Murphy Crawford in the Hungarian Cultural Garden in front of a monument to Franz Liszt.

She explained the significance of the Centennial celebration in the Gardens and why they wanted a headline act of the magnitude of Michael Stanley to perform. The acoustic concert in the Cultural Gardens will be a free event to celebrate the Gardens Centennial Year.

Michael Stanley talks music before his Cultural Gardens concert

Rock and roll musician Michael Stanley is the headline act for the Centennial celebration in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens at the 71st annual One World Day on August 28, 2016.

He spoke with Cultural Gardens board member Dan Hanson in the Hungarian Cultural Garden in front of a monument to Franz Liszt.

Michael Stanley told who would be in his all-time favorite band (Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, Clarence Clemons, etc.).

He also spoke about how the audience sings the line (Thank God for the man who put the white lines on the highway) in his song Lover at concerts.

The acoustic concert in the Cultural Gardens will be a free event to celebrate the Gardens Centennial Year.

Nguyen Thai – Hero of 1400’s Vietnam

Lt Col (Ret) Joseph Meissner spoke at a gathering of the ClevelandePeople.Com Food Adventurers at Pho Thang Vietnamese restaurant in Cleveland Ohio.  The Food Adventurers are people who like to experience new foods and learn about different cultures.  Joe told the story of Nguyen Thai who in 1418 assisted a wealthy farmer, Lê Lợi, in the Lam Sơn uprising against the Ming and launched a siege at Đông Quan (now Hanoi), the capital of the Ming occupation.

Michael Stanley to headline One World Day

It’s a match made in… Cleveland! When the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation wanted to have an extra special headliner to celebrate the Centennial Year of the Gardens at One World Day there was one name that jumped out – Michael Stanley.

Since 1945 the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation (CCGF) has celebrated One World Day exemplifying the theme of the Gardens: “Peace through Mutual Understanding.” Sunday August 28, 2016 will be the 71st annual One World Day held in the Cultural Gardens.

2016 is the Centennial year of the Cultural Gardens (the first Garden was established in 1916) and the CCGF has hosted a number of special centennial events. The celebration will culminate in One World Day on August 28 from 11AM – 7PM.

Though he has had regional and national success, Cleveland native Michael Stanley will always be associated with his hometown, and not just when performing his Top 40 hit “My Town”.

From the start of One World Day at 11 AM there will be dozens of ethnic and cultural performers on the main stage and also throughout the individual gardens. But at 6 PM the attention will be drawn to the KeyBank Centennial Main Stage where Michael Stanley & Friends will perform in an historic acoustic concert in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens. The concert, parking and all of One World Day are free to the public.

Michael Stanley’s honest, Midwestern rock & roll is custom made for Cleveland and will be a perfect fit for Cleveland’s unique treasure, the Cleveland Cultural Gardens. As Michael says, “Let’s get the show on the road.”

Johnny Wu – growing up with diplomat father

Cleveland Asian Community leader and filmmaker Johnny Wu spoke at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage on a Global Cleveland panel titled Begin the Conversation: Cleveland's Immigrant Communities Today: Pan-Asian Community.  He spoke about his upbringing in a diplomat’s family that traveled to many countries.  His father was strict and made him learn Chinese and martial arts at an early age.
