This past summer (2017), twenty-seven American students from eleven different schools received the opportunity of a lifetime. Thanks to the co-sponsorship of the Honorable Marcia Fudge and Chinese Vice Premier LIU Yandong, these students were able to partake in the Chinese Bridge Program.

Through the program, organized by the Cleveland State University Confucius Institute and joint-organized by the Capital University of Economics and Business(CUEB) in Beijing and Yunnan Normal University in Kunming, students received the chance to spend two weeks immersed in Chinese language, history, food, sights and culture in the cities of Beijing and Kunming (of Yunnan Province).

Milutin Milankovic Bust dedication in Serbian Cultural Garden

The Serbian Cultural Garden in Cleveland continues to grow. A new bust of Milutin Milankovic was dedicated on Sunday August 20th in the Serbian Cultural Garden.  His Grace Bishop Irinej and Fr. Dragoslav Kosic officiated at the dedication.

Milutin Milankovic was a Serbian mathematician, astronomer, climatologist, geophysicist, civil engineer and popularizer of science. Milankovic gave two fundamental contributions to global science. The first contribution is the "Canon of the Earth’s Insolation", which characterizes the climates of all the planets of the Solar system.

The second contribution is the explanation of Earth's long-term climate changes caused by changes in the position of the Earth in comparison to the Sun, now known as Milankovitch cycles. This explained the ice ages occurring in the geological past of the Earth, as well as the climate changes on the Earth which can be expected in the future.

Asian Highlands groundbreaking at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

Dan Hanson was on site for the groundbreaking of the new Asian Highlands exhibit at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

The area will open in Summer 2018 and will be home to the Zoo’s Amur Leopard, snow leopard, red pandas and takin.

 Central Chinese influenced architecture and other elements of Asian culture will be incorporated.

 After a quick look at the future space the gold shovels were grabbed and the groundbreaking commenced.

Where the Asian Highlands exhibit animals come from

Chris Kuhar, Executive Director of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo spoke at the groundbreaking of the new Asian Highlands exhibit at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

 The area will open in summer 2018 and will be home to the Zoo’s Amur leopard, snow leopard, red pandas and takin.

Dr. Kuhar said the animals all live in medium to high altitudes.  The Snow Leopard is from Western China, the Red Pandas from more Central China and the Amur Leopard from the Eastern coastal regions.

 He introduced Chris Kuhar, Executive Director of Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.  Dr. Kuhar said the next exhibit will highlight some of the most endangered species from Asia.  It will do what’s best for the animals and provide complex environments.

Cleveland Metroparks CEO Brian Zimmerman told of the Zoo’s new tagline “Securing the Future of Wildlife” and then introduced Cleveland Metroparks Board of Park Commissioners Chair Bruce G. Rinker who spoke at the groundbreaking of the new Asian Highlands exhibit at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

The area will open in Summer 2018 and will be home to the Zoo’s Amur leopard, snow leopard, red pandas and takin.  Rinker spoke of the responsibility that zoos around the world have and how Cleveland is leading the way.

Solar eclipse at VASJ HS in Cleveland

Great Lakes Geek Dan Hanson went back to his high school alma mater Villa Angela St Joseph HS in Cleveland for a solar eclipse watch event.

He spoke with VASJ Physics and Astronomy teacher Lucy Kulbago who explained the eclipse, the events of the day and the interest of students in science.

He then looked at some of the various ways to view the eclipse – telescope projection, pin hole devices, special glasses and so on.

Reformed School Choir of Pecs, Hungary tours Cleveland Garden

The Reformed School Choir of Pecs, Hungary is currently comprised of forty teenaged members and six adult teachers.  The choir travels in various parts of Hungary and to Hungarians living in the diaspora throughout the year. This is the first time that they performed in North America.

 The choir dedicated this performance to commemorating and celebrating the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. 

Before their evening performance at the First Hungarian Reformed Church they toured the Hungarian Cultural Garden in Cleveland Ohio. 

Of course this included the obligatory selfies.

Vietnamese Cultural Garden in Cleveland Cleanup for One World Day

A hard-working crew spent time in the beautiful weather on Saturday getting work done in the Vietnamese Cultural Garden preparing for One World Day which will be Sunday August 27 from 11 AM to 7PM.

Four leaders of the Vietnamese Cultural Garden: President - Gia Hoa Ryan, Vice President - Oanh Loi-Powell, Legal Counsel - Atty Joseph P. Meissner, and Secretary - Michael Powell, raked up branches and debris from the entire area, hard-edged and added 20 bags of mulch to the flower bed.

2017 Glenville Parade

The annual Glenville Parade took place on Saturday August 12, 2017 to kick off the Glenville Community Festival. The annual Glenville Parade and Festival is led by Cleveland Councilman Jeff Johnson.

The Parade was about an hour long but we did not include the politicians (numerous Mayoral, Council and Judicial candidates). This is near the beginning of the parade on East 105 just past Superior.

Current state and future of City Club of Cleveland

Dan Moulthrop, CEO of the City Club of Cleveland, spoke at the Rotary Club of Cleveland meeting on August 10, 2017 at Windows on the River.  

Dan told how the City Club has a large and growing membership and more meetings and events than ever.  There are also plans for a City Club in the Mahoning Valley and maybe other places.

Dan Moulthrop, CEO of the City Club of Cleveland, spoke at the Rotary Club of Cleveland meeting on August 10, 2017 at Windows on the River.  Dan told how freedom of speech can be messy and hard.

The City Club started in 1912 and in 1915 was challenged when a scheduled German speaker was protested against after the sinking of the Lusitania.

He mentioned issues with Socialist speakers and controversial people such as George Wallace in the 1960’s.

Computers Assisting People, aka CAP Inc., is a 501(c)3 non-profit Cleveland Ohio corporation.

Long before the term "digital divide" became ubiquitous, CAP volunteers were working to bring the life-changing power of technology to all the people of Cleveland and beyond.

Earlier in the year the CAP website was shit down by a DDOS attack.  Now, finally, we are back online with a somewhat rudimentary html website (as opposed to our fancy WordPress site)

POW Toan Huynh warns about Communism in Vietnam

Toan Huynh has been a Cleveland school teacher for the last 36 years.

During the Vietnam War, Huynh was kept prisoner and beaten daily in a communist concentration camp.  He warned of the evils of communism in this short presentation at the American Nationalities Movement of Ohio’s 56th annual Captive Nations Dinner on July 20, 2017.

56th annual Captive Nations Dinner

In the early months of 1959 US Senator from Ohio Frank J. Lausche and Congressman Michael Feighan had submitted the Joint Congressional Resolution 111 authorizing the United States President to issue the “Captive Nations ‘Week” Proclamation. That resolution condemned the aggressive Soviet policies that had caused the subjugation of many ‘captive’ nations to harsh communist regimes.

Then Cleveland Councilman Ralph J. Perk responded to Senator Lausche’s and Congressman Feighan’s request for support by bringing together a bi-partisan coalition of ethnic organizations that contacted nationality leaders all over the country and urged them to work for passage of Resolution 111. It took place on July 17, 1959 and was then signed by President Eisenhower.

The Resolution encouraged annual Presidential Proclamations focused on the plight of the captive nations with suggested appropriate ceremonies to be held every third week in July.

In 1990, the American Nationalities Movement held the first “freedom Celebration” and awarded “freedom” medals to its steadfast supporters including one to President George H. W. Bush.

The 56th annual Captive Nations Dinner was held July 20, 2017.

Flying Squirrel photobomb leads to new discovery

A photobombing squirrel helped a Northland College student document the highest recorded observation of the gray tree frog in northern Wisconsin.

As part of a larger study of old and large white pine canopies, Northland College senior Madison Laughlin of Edmonds, Washington, documented the tree frog almost 70 feet above the ground - more than double the highest previously on record. Her findings were published in the May issue of the scientific journal, Ecology.

"This frog appears to be able to weather sun during the day in the canopy by finding shady and cool spots,"said Laughlin, who studies natural resources and geology.

As part of the study, Laughlin and her tree-climbing professors set up three motion sensitive cameras in three white pines to observe life at the tops of the trees. They have already identified 17 species of animals - squirrels, birds, mice, and tree frogs - as well as a mushroom species, a variety of insects and many lichen species particular to this special habitat.

"This is research that is literally being done in our backyard," said Assistant Professor of Natural Resources Erik Olson. "That is one of the beautiful things about science - we don't have to go to the ends of the Earth to make new insights into our world."

In this case, capturing frogs in unexpected places. Tree frogs are small and similar in temperature to their environment so do not set off the motion sensitive cameras. However, flying squirrels do. And on four different occasions, flying squirrels have exposed tree frogs up high.

"It was really exciting to find something that wasn't a squirrel," Laughlin said of looking through hundreds of collected camera captures.

Laughlin says that there is a gap in what we know about tree frogs. "Oddly, there isn't much research on tree frogs in trees. Most of the research is about their breeding, which takes place in ponds," she said. "This research is helping open the door to the vertical dimension of habitat."

These images suggest a higher level of habitat usage in the tops of trees than previously thought. "I love forestry and forest ecology,"Laughlin said. "And I've never thought about the three-dimensional aspect of habitat - there's a lot going on up there."

Additional work is underway to describe the habitat usage of other animals high in the trees and to begin to answer the question of why tree frogs go so high.

"We're not surprised that the canopy is an important habitat, but we are surprised how many and what species are up there and how often they visit," said Assistant Professor of Forestry Jonathan Martin who is co-directing the research. "The combination of the scale and growth patterns of these trees as well as the habitat surprises gives me a renewed appreciation for the complex processes occurring high off ground." 

RIP Judge Jean Murrell Capers

Judge Capers was a pioneer as the first black woman elected to the city council of any major U.S. city when she was elected in Cleveland in 1949. She was also a tennis champion among other accomplishments. She has passed away at the age of 104.

Judge Jean Capers was the Grand Marshall of the 38th annual Glenville Community Festival and Parade in 2015 when she was 102.

Councilman Jeff Johnson introduced Judge Capers at the event and she passed on some words of wisdom.

RIP Maryam Mirzakhani

Maryam Mirzakhani was an Iranian mathematician and a professor of mathematics at Stanford University. 

Her research topics include Teichmüller theory, hyperbolic geometry, ergodic theory, and symplectic geometry. In 2014, Mirzakhani became both the first woman and the first Iranian honored with the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in mathematics. The award committee cited her work in "the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces".

Mirzakhani died from breast cancer on July 14, 2017 at the age of 40.

Over 200 people attended the Rusyn Vatra festival in Burton, Ohio on June 3, 2017 under sunny skies to enjoy Rusyn culture, food and camaraderie. Visitors came from as far away as Dallas, Texas, Alaska and South Carolina.

The Lucina Folk Ensemble, Living Traditions Folk Ensemble, Slavjane and the Zumbercani Tamburitzans gave spirited performances.
