St Stephen Church Cornerstone Dedication

 Cleveland's newest Hungarian monument to St. Stephen, the first King of Hungary, is a cornerstone saved from the recently demolished St. Stephen Hungarian Church in McKeesport, Pennsylvania (1900-2020). The cornerstone was brought to the historic St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church at 9016 Buckeye Road in Cleveland Ohio which was established on June 4, 1893.

The Church and the United Hungarian Societies (UHS) of Cleveland hosted an outdoor dedication of the monument in the Church's courtyard.

The theme of the dedication ceremony was "Honoring our past by remembering St. Stephen's Catholic Church of McKeesport."

America's first Hungarian Roman Catholic churches in order of cornerstone-laying date:

• St. Elizabeth's Church - Cleveland, OH. June 4, 1893
• St Mary's Church - Throop, PA. July 21, 1895
• St. Stephen's Church - East Toledo, OH. Dedication August 20, 1899
• St. Stephen's Church - Bridgeport, CT. November 30, 1899
• St. Stephen's Church - McKeesport, PA. September 8, 1900

Hungarian studies at CSU

A special announcement was made at the end of the Liszt concert program in the Hungarian Cultural Garden on June 23, 2019.


Endre Szentkiralyi, president of the United Hungarian Societies, announced that starting in 2020 the Hungarian government will pay for 4 years of a Hungarian professor to teach at Cleveland State University.

Reformed School Choir of Pecs, Hungary in Cleveland

The Reformed School Choir of Pecs, Hungary toured the Hungarian Cultural Garden in Cleveland Ohio and then performed 3 short pieces.

The choir travels in various parts of Hungary and to Hungarians living in the diaspora throughout the year. This is the first time that they performed in North America.

This is the first 2 pieces of the performance in the Hungarian Cultural Garden.

Wreaths at Freedom Fighter and Cardinal Mindszenty statues

Two 1956ers and two young Hungarian American Scouts placed wreaths at the statues of the 1956 Freedom Fighter and Cardinal Mindszenty at the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 in Cardinal Mindszenty Plaza in Cleveland, Ohio. Then one of the 1956ers said a few words in Hungarian.

Master of Ceremonies Michael Horvath led a prayer for the 1956ers at the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 in Cardinal Mindszenty Plaza in Cleveland, Ohio.

The crowd said the Our Father in Hungarian.

Master of Ceremonies Michael Horvath welcomed the crowd to the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 in Cardinal Mindszenty Plaza in Cleveland, Ohio.

They then sang the national anthems of the United States and Hungary.

Jeanette Grasselli Brown served as Mistress of Ceremonies at the program celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight of 1956.  The event took place in the Rotunda of Cleveland City Hall and dozens of ‘56ers were in attendance.

She thanked keynote speaker and 56er Honorary Consul General of Hungary Laszlo Bojtos.

She then read part of the entry from the US Congressional Record about the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and then the flags of the US and Hungary were retired.

Honorary Consul General of Hungary Laszlo Bojtos was a 56er.  He gave the keynote address at the program celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight of 1956.

The event took place in the Rotunda of Cleveland City Hall and dozens of ‘56ers were in attendance.

Consul Bojtos called for all the 56ers to stand and then a group photo was taken.

No other day since history began has shown more clearly the eternal unquenchability of man’s desire to be free, whatever the odds against success, whatever the sacrifice required.”

Hungary 1956 - Who is not with us, is against us

A 56er told the motto of his countrymen during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.  This was at the program celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight of 1956.

The event took place in the Rotunda of Cleveland City Hall and dozens of ‘56ers were in attendance.

He spoke the saying in Hungarian and then translated it as ‘Who is not with us is against us.’

Invocation at Hungarian Revolution of 1956 Ceremony

Rt. Rev. Dr. Csaba Krasznai of the First Hungarian Reformed Church gave the Invocation at the program celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight of 1956.

The event took place in the Rotunda of Cleveland City Hall and dozens of ‘56ers were in attendance.

Rev. Krasznai first spoke in English and then Hungarian.

The Crack in the Berlin Wall began with a hole in a flag in Budapest!

At one time (maybe still) there were more Hungarians in Cleveland than anywhere in the world outside of Budapest.  Many Hungarians came here in 1956 because of the Fight for Freedom against the Soviet Union in Hungary.

Carolyn Balogh inducted in Cleveland International Hall of Fame

Carolyn Balogh was inducted into the Cleveland International Hall of Fame for her work in both the Hungarian and Hispanic communities.  In her acceptance speech Carolyn told of the Centennial of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.

Dr. Maria Pujana inducts Carolyn Balogh into Hall of Fame

Dr. Maria Pujana inducted Carolyn Balogh into the Cleveland International Hall of Fame for her work in both the Hungarian and Hispanic communities.  Dr. Pujana was inducted into the Cleveland International Hall of Fame in 2014.

Hungarian ballroom dance at 2016 Paprika

The Cleveland Hungarian Development Panel hosted their annual Paprika! Event on March 12, 2016.  This year’s event recognized the centennial of the Cleveland Museum of Art.  Dancers from the Viva Dance Studio performed ballroom style dancing to Hungarian music.
