At the Slavic Village press conference about the continuing redevelopment of Slavic Village and celebration of its 25th homebuyer, the homeowners spoke.  They are a young couple from rural Ohio.  Jeremy graduated from college with a teaching certificate and decided to teach at a Cleveland Public High School.  Along with his bride, Heather, they decided to buy a home in Slavic Village.

King’s Day (Koningsdag) after the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander on 30
April 2013 (what was then still Queen’s Day).

The royal celebrations were first held on 31 August
1885 in honor of the birth of Queen Wilhelmina, and the Queen’s Day
(Koninginnedag) tradition was born. After Wilhelmina’s daughter (Juliana)
succeeded to the throne in 1949, the day was changed to 30 April in accordance
with the new Queen's birthday.

The event was organized by Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and Irish Northern Aid.  The presentation featured the  Daughters of Erin – the women of 1916.

Fr. Hratch Sargsyan spoke of the newly canonized Armenian saints together at the Commemoration of the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide in the Rotunda of Cleveland City Hall on April 24, 2015.  He said, “We now have an additional 1.5 million saints praying for us today.”



He told the people to leave with their heads high because they are not victims; they are descendants of the survivors.

Russian involvement in American Culture

Cleveland Russian Cultural Garden Co-Chair Boris Vinogradsky gave a presentation about Russian culture and the involvement of Russians in American culture. He spoke at the 99th birthday of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens on April 14, 2015.

 

Sprinkling Days after Easter

The week following PASCHA (Easter) is called "Bright Week" in the Eastern (Orthodox) Christian Church. During Bright Week there are many different ways to enjoy this "Feast of Feasts" - including the "Sprinkling Days"!



 On Monday within some of the various nationalities who are Orthodox, the boys seek out the girls of their parishes to "sprinkle" them - usually with scented water - and on Tuesdays, the girls seek out the boys to do the same "sprinkling"!



 On this Tuesday Ukrainian Dozia Krislaty and Rusyn Laurel Tombazzi sprinkled Ken Kovach. Then Vietnamese Gia Hoa Ryan sprinkled him as well.

Cleveland Ballet Youth Company - Masquerade

Company who performed a dance from Masquerade at the 99th birthday of the
Cleveland Cultural Gardens on April 14, 2015. 

Cleveland Ballet Youth Company is a
classically trained youth ballet group made up of young dancers of exceptional
potential.  The mission of the Cleveland
Ballet Youth Company is to train dancers (ages 14-19) in preparation of
fulfilling Cleveland Ballet’s core of professional dancers.

The New Cleveland Ballet

Dr. Michael Krasnyansky, Chairman of The Board of the New
Cleveland Ballet, spoke at the 99th birthday of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens
on April 14, 2015. He told how the original Cleveland Ballet left Cleveland for
California 15 years ago.  The New
Cleveland Ballet is now being formed.

Internet of Things - Cleveland [R]IoT

The Internet of Things [IoT] is the heart of innovation and has an enormous impact on the way we do business. By 2020, 50 billion devices will be connected and the market will be worth $14 trillion.
OneCommunity realizes this is an exciting time in the world of technology, and in the city of Cleveland, so they organized this introductory event to bring together local leaders to discuss the creation of a smarter, more inter-connected world, with the goal of transforming ideas into reality over the next year.

Lev Gonick, CEO of OneCommunity, welcomed the crowd to the Cleveland [R]Iot Regional Summit at the Global Center for Health Innovation. [R]Iot stands for Realizing the Internet of Things. Gonick told how the region may not have fully taken advantage of the first two chapters of the Digital Revolution - The Internet and 802.11 Wi-Fi, but Cleveland and Northeast Ohio are poised to take advantage of what may become the 3rd Chapter - the Internet of Things.

Murphy Irish Dancers win World Championship

The Murphy Irish Senior Dancers spent Easter Week in Montreal, Canada competing with more than five thousand Irish dancers from all over the world. And they won! They are the World Champions!


A panel of seven judges - also from around the world - scored the dancers 475 out of 500 available points. They outscored their closest competitor by over 100 points. It is estimated that more than 20,000 people were spectators and had the opportunity to witness the competition.

A win like this does not come easy. Competition is stiff and the dancers need to practice constantly. Few athletes practice as much, and in this Superbowl of Irish Dancing it paid off for the Murphy Irish Senior Dancers.

Russ worked at CBS News in New York and covered the war in Bosnia, went to the Democratic Republic of Congo and interviewed then President Laurent Kabila, reported from Cuba, India, Indonesia and The Marshall Islands. Though born in St. Louis, Russ has been adopted by his new home of Cleveland.

She explained that the Global Center features four themed floors: Health and Home on the first floor, highlighted by the State-of-the-Art Patient Home; People, Patients and Caregivers on the second floor; Clinical Spaces on the third floor; and Health Care information technology on the fourth floor.  

She stressed that IT permeates all 4 floors of the Center.

Free Health Screenings at Cleveland Asian Festival

The Cleveland Asian Festival is known for its cultural performances, family friendly activities and delicious food.  These components contributed to the Cleveland Asian Festival being named Best Festival in Cleveland.  The annual two-day event typically draws about 40,000 people to Cleveland’s Asia Town and they spend about $2 million at the event and in the area. 

But the most valuable contribution of the annual Cleveland Asian Festival may be the Health Pavilion.  Free Health Screenings are available for all attendees at the Cleveland Asian Festival.  Major health care organizations will be in attendance: Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth, Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, Asian Services in Action, and Cleveland Department of Public Health.

Screenings include vision, blood pressure, body mass index, glucose, cholesterol, lead testing, mammogram (by appointment), sleep disorders, bone density, HIV, and dental.  Health Education will also be available in relation to all of the screenings along with alternative medicine.

Health Pavilion Chair Michael Mendoza said “The health pavilion is a great way for festival goers to learn about their health and health services from local experts.  Health care organizations benefit from the high traffic of people attending the festival to promote their services."

Volunteer interpreters will be on hand to help translate many Asian languages for the health screenings.   The community should be made aware so they do not miss this valuable opportunity for free, culturally aware health screenings.

About the 2015 Cleveland Asian Festival

The 2015 Cleveland Asian festival will be held May 16^th & 17^th, 2015 on Payne Ave between East 30th and East 27th Street in Cleveland.  Admission and Parking are free.

The Cleveland Asian Festival features modern and traditional performers on two main stages as well as a food area with dozens of restaurants featuring various Asian foods.  The entire family will find something to enjoy including an Educational Children’s Activity Area, Sushi and Egg Roll Eating Competitions, inflatable sumo wrestling, Free AsiaTown Trolley Tours and more.
