Fax me Baby

I sent a fax the other day.

That doesn't sound like a big deal but it's been many months since I sent the last one. Being a Geek I used to have a portable fax that could be (gulp) attached to my belt to demonstrate my Alpha Geek status.

Now, we keep the fax machine off because every morning there would be a bunch of spam advertisements and never anything "good."

When I needed to send a quick page the other day and the company just listed their fax number, I plugged in the fax, took a moment to remember that the paper went in face down and top end first and sent it off.

It was convenient and fast but I have no idea what it looked like to the recipient. You can be pretty sure when you attach a pdf to an e-mail.

With a scanner on my desk, the fax has been used less and less. We don't print our fax number on business cards or letterhead anymore. Do you?

Let us know how often you use the fax machine and why. We will publish some of the most interesting comments (anonymous if you prefer).

Leave a comment - just don't fax it.

Fitness for Geeks

I  just finished reading Fitness for Geeks: Real Science, Great Nutrition, and Good Health

Let's face it. Many of us who qualify for the moniker Geek (or Geekette) tend to spend a lot of time seated in front of a computer. We also tend to eat and drink items that are convenient and tasty which usually is a synonym for 'unhealthy.'

People like us are always looking for a clever or unique way to solve a problem. So if fitness is the problem, we approach it as a hackable goal. When a book proposes to lead us to fitness in such a manner, especially with the credibility of being part of the O'Reilly family, we have to check it out.

Geek Love

One of the first columns I ever wrote for Inside Business Magazine (about 12 years ago) was titled Geek Love.

It told about nerdy and techie places that Geeks and Geekettes might find each other - like user group meetings.

We are in the smartphone/tablet age so of course Geek Love has evolved.

There is a new free app called Kiss My Valentine that will "send text kisses and text hugs to family that normally I may have not taken the time to reach out to in the past"

Geek Christmas

Let's face it. As people like us make the holiday rounds, we will be on one long tech support incident. Especially if the relatives have the tech knowledge of the guy who hung these Christmas lights.

"Can you look at Cousin Mary's PC? She lost all her icons."

Can you get my wireless set up?

How do I hook up my phone/tablet/mp3 player to my computer and TV?

Why do I get these boxes popping up on my screen every 15 seconds? I swear I didn't touch anything!

So make sure you travel with a USB flash drive that has anti-virus, anti-malware, a registry cleaner and other utilities. Upgrade them to at least Internet Explorer 8 if not IE 9 and/or Google Chrome. Maybe set them up for one of the cheap cloud backup services too so they won't be calling you on New Year's Day saying their PC crashed and they don't have any backups.

And try to enjoy the holidays - even if you are left upstairs in the computer room while everyone else is downstairs drinking eggnog.

Ho Ho Ho.
