Nupur Goel is in the 11th Grade at Gilmour Academy.  She was the 2016 Grand Prize winner of the Stop the Hate essay program of the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage.  She spoke on a panel run by the Maltz Museum and Global Cleveland titled Begin the Conversation: Cleveland's Immigrant Communities Today: Pan-Asian Community.  She started a club to help other students learn about her background and culture.

Indian Population never settled in Cleveland Chinatown

Opera and Ballet in the Italian Cultural Garden

In 1930, the Italian Cultural Garden opened as a "symbol of Italian culture." Almost 70 years ago the Italian Garden hosted the San Carlo Opera in the lower level amphitheater. In 2008, the Italian Cultural Garden Foundation revived this tradition by presenting Opera in the Garden.

A record crowd of over 2,000 attended the July 31, 2016 performance by the artists from the Opera Circle Cleveland Company who were joined by dancers from the Cleveland Ballet.

Special Parade Grand Marshal at Cultural Gardens One World Day

Cleveland, OH – Since 1945 the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation (CCGF) has celebrated One World Day exemplifying the theme of the Gardens: “Peace through Mutual Understanding." Sunday August 28, 2016 will be the 71st annual One World Day held in the Cultural Gardens. 

2016 is the Centennial year of the Cultural Gardens (the first Garden was established in 1916) and the CCGF has hosted a number of special centennial events.  The celebration will culminate in One World Day on August 28 from 11AM – 7PM.

The Parade of Flags is always a popular and much anticipated part of One World Day.  Marchers parade down East Blvd and then MLK Blvd wearing the costumes and carrying the flags of the ethnic heritage they represent.

Befitting a Centennial celebration, the 2016 One World Day Parade of Flags will be special because the dozens of nationality groups will be led by a celebrity Grand Marshal.  You may have seen Stipe Miocic in the Cleveland Cavaliers Championship Parade.  Now you can see him as Grand Marshall of the One World Day Parade of Flags. 

Stipe Miocic is the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) Heavyweight Champion of the world and he hails from Cleveland.  Stipe Miocic was a Cleveland Golden Gloves boxing champion and NCAA Division I wrestler at Cleveland State University. 

Stipe is of Croatian heritage and will lead the Croatian and other delegations in the parade.  He will be on hand for photos and autographs after the Parade of Flags.

Concerned about parking? Don’t be. There is free parking at Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center’s VA with free shuttle services transporting from the VA Parking Lot to the Chinese Garden (South) and at Cleveland Metroparks lot (North Gate at the Gordon Park) at walking distance to One World Day events.  Several 13-Passengers Golf Carts will be available to transport those who need it throughout the gardens. About the Cleveland Cultural Gardens and One World Day

The Cleveland Cultural Gardens consist of 29 nationality gardens along East Blvd and MLK Blvd with several more in the planning and development stages.   One World Day on August 28 is the official annual celebration of the Gardens.  11 AM- 7 PM.  Free admission and free parking.

The One World Day Centennial Celebration is a Councilmatic Event Presented by Councilman Kevin Conwell, County Councilwoman Yvonne Conwell and in partnership with University Circle, Inc.

Art and Stories from Mughal India exhibit at Cleveland Museum of Art

Art and Stories from Mughal India presents the story of the Mughals — and stories for the Mughals — in 100 exquisite paintings from the 1500s to 1800s.

The Mughal Empire existed for more than 300 years, from 1526 until the advent of British colonial rule in 1858. It encompassed territory that included vast portions of the Indian subcontinent and Afghanistan. The Mughal rulers were Central Asian Muslims who assimilated many religious faiths under their administration.

Famed for its distinctive architecture, including the Taj Mahal, the Mughal Empire is also renowned for its colorful and engaging paintings, many taking the form of scenes from narrative tales.

Many of the paintings and items are small. So you will want to use the free iPhone app in which the exhibition's curator, Sonya Rhie Quintanilla, relates stories and describes paintings. The app includes hyperlinks to an audio glossary of names and terms, and 100 tweetable facts illustrated with a related detail image from the 100 paintings on view. Art and Stories from Mughal India is on view in the Kelvin and Eleanor Smith Foundation Hall from July 31, 2016 through October 23, 2016, and is free to the public in celebration of the museum’s centennial year.

Mileva Maric Bust Dedication in the Serbian Cultural Garden

The Serbian Cultural Garden honors many Serbian figures such as Nikola Tesla, King Peter I, Michael Pupin, Stevan Mokranjac, Bishop Petar Njegos andVuk Karadzic. A new bust was dedicated on Sunday June 19, 2016 honoring Mileva Maric the Serbian physicist and mathematician who was the wife and scientific partner of Albert Einstein.

The ceremony included a blessing and dedication, stories about Maric and songs by the Serbian Men's Choir Kosovo.
