Cleveland Cultural Gardens 70th annual One World Day

Cleveland Cultural Gardens 70th annual One World Day

For Immediate Release

August 6, 2015

Cleveland, OH – Since 1945 the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation (CCGF) has celebrated One World Day exemplifying the theme of the Gardens: “Peace through Mutual Understanding."

August 23, 2015 will be the 70th annual One World Day in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens and it will be special as it will also be the official kickoff, with the City of Cleveland, of the Centennial Year of the Gardens.  The first Garden was established in 1916 so the CCGF, City of Cleveland and the community will have a year-long celebration of this local treasure.

The history and growth of the Cultural Gardens is a mirror of the history and growth of Cleveland.  The early gardens were predominantly European (Italian, German, Polish, Hungarian, Irish, etc.).  As world events (Fall of Soviet Union, etc.) occurred, new Gardens emerged.  As people from other areas came to Cleveland, interest in gardens for their heritage grew and new and proposed gardens focus on the Middle East, Asia and Africa.  There is renewed interest and effort to complete African American and Native American Gardens.  Soon there will be 35 or so gardens representing many of the diverse nationalities that make Cleveland home.

The annual One World Day celebrates Cleveland’s history and ethnic diversity with a variety of family-friendly activities including:

  • Parade of Flags (featuring colorful costumes of dozens of nationalities)

  • Naturalization Ceremony (a moving welcome to new citizen from 2 dozen nations)

  • Trolley Tours (See all the Gardens in one day)

  • Cultural performances (dozens of diverse ethnic performances)

  • Ethnic Food (Traditional foods in many gardens, food trucks and special ethnic vendors)

  • Passport Program (kids, of all ages, can get a passport and do activities in the gardens)

  • 80 page One World Day booklet (History, map and info of the Gardens and more)
