Lt. Colonel Gary Minadeo is a graduate of St. Joseph High School and West Point.  After retiring from the service he came back to St Joe’s to teach Math and Technology.  He spoke about the Continuum of Military Service at the ceremony dedicating the St. Joseph High School Viking Veteran Memorial in Cleveland.

Jim Tobin was MC at the ceremony to dedicate the Viking Veteran Memorial to honor the six St. Joseph High School students who were killed in Vietnam.  He said he thinks of two songs: Don Henley’s The End of the Innocence speaking about the death of your brothers and classmates and Bob Dylan’s Forever Young.  The ceremony ended with Taps and the Retirement of Colors.

Boulevard of 500 Flags and 9-11 Memorial

A walk through the Boulevard of 500 Flags and 9-11 Memorial in Eastlake Ohio just east of Cleveland.  There are plaques with names of many local veterans on these flags. The 9-11 Memorial includes actual wreckage from the World Trade Center, Pentagon and grass from Shanksville Pennsylvania.  There is also an eternal flame.

K-Pop Rocks the House at Cleveland Asian Festival

Cleveland, OH – Thousands of people visited the Dragon Stage at the 2016 Cleveland Asian Festival (CAF) to watch the finals of the K-Pop competition. 

In prior weeks, local dancers submitted their best mashups of popular K-Pop dance routines and people voted for finalists via social media.  Saturday afternoon, the final dance off took place.

K-pop (short for Korean pop) has become a worldwide phenomenon.  Originating in South Korea, it covers a range of styles including dance-pop, pop ballad, electropop, R&B, and hip-hop music.  Five finalists were chosen to compete in the finals at the Cleveland Asian Festival for a $2500 grand prize.

The seating area filled up quickly and standing room only crowds encompassed the stage.

 CAF entertainment coordinator Yin Tang said “It was great seeing so many in the audience singing along to the songs as the dancers performed.”

The judges included music and dance industry leaders and even a priest, Father Sung-Woong Lee, who comes from South Korea.  The cheering of the audience played a part in the decisions but it was the opinions of the expert panel that determined the winner. 

The Grand Champion of the 2016 Cleveland Asian Festival K-Pop competition, and winner of the $2500 grand prize, was Chakai.  2nd Place was awarded to Abracadabra Productions and 3rd Place went to Gizibe.  Congratulations to all the competitors and the winners.

The Cleveland Asian Festival is a landmark undertaking to unite the community through collaboration and recognition of its culture, diversity, and people. A record crowd of 45,018 attended the 6^th annual Cleveland Asian Festival in 2015.

Stand By Me – The Drifters at Alan Freed event

The ashes of legendary disc jockey and creator of the term Rock and Roll Alan Freed were laid to rest in a ceremony at Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland.  A ceremony was held and a monument was unveiled.

  Legendary disc jockey and rock historian Norm N. Nite introduced Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members The Drifters. This was their last song – the classic Ben E. King song Stand by Me.

  Legendary disc jockey and rock historian Norm N. Nite introduced Little Steven Van Zandt who was the keynote speaker.

 Steve Van Zandt is known for his work with Southside Johnny, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, solo albums, acting in the Sopranos and his radio show Little Steven’s Underground Garage.  Van Zandt told stories of Alan Freed and rock and roll.

David Fleshler, Vice Provost for International Affairs at Case Western Reserve University told of the difference between Globalization and Internationalization.

Joe Meissner asked Joe Cimperman, former Cleveland councilman and now president of Global Cleveland, how to reach the people in the suburbs concerning new and “different” people moving in.

This was at the ASIA Inc. Friendraiser event at the Ariel International Center.  Joe gave some personal stories as an answer and told people to bet on people who are broken, who have an accent and so on.

Polish National Anthem at Constitution Day in Parma

Fr. Eric Orzech, President of the Polish American Congress Ohio Division, served as MC of the Polish Constitution Day celebration in Parma Ohio. Shrine Church of St Stanislaus in Cleveland

A short walk through the inside of the Shrine Church of St Stanislaus in Cleveland’s Slavic Village neighborhood.

Fr. John (Sung-Woong) Lee invocation at Hall of Fame

Fr. John (Sung-Woong) Lee was born in Daegu S. Korea. He was ordained a priest in 2011. He has been ministering as a parochial vicar at Communion of Saints Parish in Cleveland Heights since 2014.  He gave the invocation at the induction ceremony of the Cleveland International Hall of Fame.
